Zoo Support
Zoos around the world support tiger conservation
Modern zoos are significant contributors to the conservation of wild animals. Many zoos actively operate their own projects in the field, but contributions do not stop there; the populations of endangered species held in zoos also generate support. As well as the obvious areas of preserving genetic diversity over time and educating and informing the general public, zoo populations can form a highly successful base for fundraising and a vital resource for producing useful biological information and skills.

Zoo tigers and fundraising
In recent years, both the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) and the Zoo and Aquarium Association (Australasia) (formally known as ARAZPA) have run highly successful regional fundraising campaigns for tigers, raising well over three-quarters of a million euro in two years, and individual zoos continue the effort. 21st Century Tiger would like to thank EAZA, Zoo and Aquarium Association (Australasia) and all participating zoos for their contributions, which make such a huge difference to tiger conservation.
Tigers are a great focus for conservation for two reasons. Their beauty, grace and power have fascinated human beings for centuries and continue to inspire us to protect wild places and wild animals. As they need large areas to live in, in saving tigers we are also protecting many other animals and ultimately the ecosystems on which all life on earth depends.
Through its project review process, 21st Century Tiger provides a service for zoos (and indeed anyone) wishing to support conservation projects. We guarantee that 100% of donations will go to projects that have been thoroughly examined by a panel of international experts. The projects must have sound practical scientific and conservation value and use local staff wherever possible.
If you would like to get involved, whether you are an individual or a zoo or any other group, please contact us for further information.
2002 - 2004 EAZA Tiger Campaign
Between 2002 and 2004, the EAZA Tiger Campaign in European zoos raised over three-quarters of a million euros. This represents an increase in the global funding pool for tigers of about eight percent a year for those two years – a huge contribution! Over 130 zoos in 24 countries took part in the campaign, from Finland to France and from Ireland to Russia. Colchester Zoo in the UK reached the highest total at a staggering 61,070 euros!
2003 ARAZPA Tiger Campaign
ARAZPA (now known as Zoo and Aquarium Association (Australasia)) launched a parallel tiger campaign during 2003, also using 21st Century Tiger to channel the funds. ARAZPA zoos hold only Sumatran tigers, unlike European zoos which have both Amur and Sumatran, and so their efforts focused on projects in Sumatra. More than AU$100,000 was raised by seven Australasian zoos!
WAZA - World Association of Zoos and Aquariums
Many animal species are threatened with extinction. Zoos do not only keep such species in their custody with a view to maintaining ex situ reserve populations, but they increasingly link their ex situ activities with conservation projects in the field.
Zoos and Aquariums of the WAZA Network manage and support such "in situ" conservation projects in all parts of the world to contribute to the maintenance of the great variety of nature. 21st Century Tiger aims to have all its projects endorsed by WAZA.
